Long story short - pretty much everything in the game has a specific trigger before you can pick up the key objects required. For example, go to the basement, examine the mirror. -> Find locked door next to kitchen sink. -> Examine fire place two rooms to the left -> Examine pot of water -> take key -> take rag -> clean mirror. Note that most of those actions are unavailable until you examine the proper object before hand. TL;DR. If you're stuck, look at EVERYTHING. Once you go through it once it's super easy. Side note; this is better than anything else I've seen out of those LoK tools. Which isn't saying much, but still.
