>> Anon 19056 >Lastly, if you really enjoy the game, donating any amount through my blog will get you a cheat-enabled version, including access to the incomplete full-female Lith content! inb4 backlash for wanting money for your work I played MVOL before and honestly, you hardly notice Lith even having a dick, if you ignore some lines and commands, I guess.
>> Anon 19061 I was prepared to defend this game, saying I had enjoyed it a couple years ago and that the game itself is free, he said the money is not for the real game itself but for a special custom-version debug-cheat version only. But then I opened the game. The first thing my flash player informed me of was that this game was now compiled using encrypted code. Now, while obfuscated code in a games code is a dick move that can be occasionally forgiven, compiling using encrypted code is an unforgivable sin. It means the person who compiled it is a complete bloody dishonest scamming arsehole wanker piece of smeg. The primary reason to use it is that they are using illegal code. Code that performs virus like actions and sends your personal info back to its home server. The second reason is that someone intends to money-grab the fuck out of their game in exactly the way that people complain about it here in other threads. I will no longer be supporting of Lithier for doing this bullshit. I went back and checked his earlier versions. MVOL14 and below seem ok, but MVOL15 and 16 both use this encrypted code core crap. Notice that the game requires network access but this sites auto scanner couldn't scan the game correctly? If I were you, I wouldn't attempt to play these kind of files or the next thing you know all your browsers saved passwords will be sent back to some unknown server where you identity will be stolen, emails read, and bank account emptied. Every time I come across one of these kind of things I add it my virus database so my computer never lets me open it again by accident if I forget and click on it again in the future.
>> Anon 19063 >># People have actually complained about the game not being 'hackable' on the board s/he posted because of this obsfucated code stuff. Is it really that bad? I have literally no idea of stuff liek this.
>> Lithier 19064 >># I think it's a little unfair to condemn my game as malicious software just because it's sealed @_@; This game has been my personal project for a long time, a work of pride into which I have made a great emotional investment. But every once in a while I'd have people come up and mention that they somehow tore my game apart to study it, like dissecting my child to see what makes it "tick." The most optimistic term I could use for it was "creepy." On top of that, if people were ever able to decompile and understand the game, they could find a way to force cheats and work around my only tool for encouraging donations at their leisure. So I've been considering the possibility of obfuscation for a long time. But that wasn't why I've sealed the game. Starting with v0.15, I set up MVOL to send data about how it's played to my server so that I can "look over players' shoulders" and see how it's played without... actually having to look over anyone's shoulders cause that would be creepy, especially with a porn game :p But I want to learn about how the game is played so that I can refine the gameplay, make sure the game is balanced the way I want it to be in actual practice, see how it's typically played so I know if I should include more clues or hints here or there to smooth out the experience. Problem being, if I put that kind of code in the game, then anyone that opens the game up can use that code to backdoor data into my server and fuck the whole thing over pretty easy. So it finally reached the point where, between cheats, creepy shmucks, server vulnerabilities, and just wanting people to play the game rather than open it up and spoil how it really works, I decided it was time to seal it up. MVOL is not open-source. It's largely a one-man project. I offer the game for free, but it's my choice if I want to keep the code under wraps. I'm sorry if this gives you the wrong impression, but I have no malicious intent in sealing my game. I just want to provide the best experience I can, and I feel like I can never get all the feedback I want and need for it. For what it's worth, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the game, even if it was back in the day. Also: re-reading your post, I realized you were making a distinction between obfuscation and encryption. To my knowledge, I'm only using an obfuscator. Unless you're referring to the game encrypting the data it sends to the server?
>> Anon 19066 >># If you keep the lines of communication open, giving full disclosure about any changes you make, no one will misinterprete your reasons. I'm not any of the previous posters, but I did play and enjoy the game too (v0.14).
>> Anon 19067 >>lithier Keep communication lines open; announce what you're adding/changing and why so there'll be no misinterpretation of your intention. I'm not a previous poster, but rather someone who's also enjoyed v0.14 back in the day.
>> Anon 19075 >># is it even possible for a browser swf file to perfom such hideosly illegal actions without any notification from anywhere?
>> Lithier 19076 >># I explain all new changes at length on my blog ^.^; The only thing I've been cryptic about are things I wanted to be pleasant surprises, like big new twists in the story, or the addition of artwork. I did link my update log, but I already have too long a shpiel to add when I post this places without spelling out everything the game does as well, if that's what you mean 6_6; I agree that communication is key, but I kinda wish he'd at least glanced at my blog; I'm not gonna shove my policies down his throat in advance (besides the part where this is already briefly explained on the game's main menu, I guess?)... Anyway, thank you for your feedback, and I'm glad you've enjoyed the game ^.^;
>> Anon 19081 >># Wait, did you just admit that person was right about you collecting information directly from a persons machine and sending it back to your own server for you to browse through? Definitely creepy, and depending on where that person is located, potentially highly illegal for you. Not even going to try playing that thing now.
>> Anon 19082 >># Yeah thats shady as all fuck. Fuck you, fuck this game, I ain't touching this thing with a 10 foot pole.
>> Anon 19083 >># >># Holy fuck shut up and let us fap already
>> Anon 19084 I really think anyone worried about this title "hijacking" your data is paranoid. What OP said is quite common. It's called metrics (or telemetry). They're simple hooks in the code to send data back to developers, whenever a player performs specific actions. Something as simple to how many time you've accessed the options menu, to something as complex as completing a specific quest, wearing specific gear, on a specific day. Often including information such as how long a players sessions are and at what points they stop. Any AAA developer worth their salts makes use of this kind of data, and not just in games either. YouTube does this, any AD servers ever on the Internet do this, pretty much every app on your phone does this. While this might seem creepy, this is just part of the reality of the age we're living in. It's still not as creepy as the NSA passing around that photo of your girl's tits she sent you. To OP: you might want to consider including an opt-out to alleviate concerns any future concerns. (Full disclosure, I haven't played the game, doesn't sound like it'd float my boat, so to speak. So I don't know if you already include that option.)
>> Anon 19088 >Based on your decision, your avatar has automatically been equipped with a vagina. chuckle that's enough playing for today
>> Anon 19090 >># >The primary reason to use it is that they are using illegal code. Code that performs virus like actions and sends your personal info back to its home server. Haha, you don't know what you're talking about.
>> Lithier 19091 >># Yes, that's precisely what I'm talking about. I look at data of what scenes in the game are most popular, what scenes barely any players might ever find, what configurations are more popular, things like that. I collect gameplay data, because gameplay is what I care about. And yes, if you go to the options screen you can disable the sending of player data. It's on by default, but the control is in your hands.
>> Anon 19094 >># Hahaha, no. Not even anything resembling what he said is possible.
>> Horsie 19101 >># 1. The game can't be encrypted, because flash player needs to decrypt the game to play it, so even if it was, the encryption key would be inside the player or the file itself, so very easy to decrypt. 2. Flash files work in a sandbox. A sandbox is basically way to cut everything from a software except the only things it needs in the rest of the computer. Thanks to this, a flash can't access your files nor your browser data... even it needs explicit permisson to use your webcam or microphone. 2b. The only way a flash file can do evil things if it exploits a vulnerability in the flash player software, but if you have the flash player at the last version and/or the lastest browser and/or a decent internet/virus protection software, you're most protected. And if you don't have any of these, you basically deserve to have your computer full of malware and your personal data all over the Internet. 3. The game itself notifies you in the main menu that it will send telemetry/metrics to a server, and informs you that you can disable this in the options menu. And this is a game about reading, so I doubt anybody misses this. Conclusion: Two options: 1. You're a paranoid computer illiterate. 2. You're jealous of someone that is trying to get money to keep doing a good game that a lot of people like, so you're trying to scare people off his game. Either way, I'm good with you not wanting to play this game. You don't deserve to enjoy it.
>> Anon 19104 "Hey guys, like most game companies have in their EULA for games that have online connectivity, I monitor what the player does and have the data sent to me to better analyze how you guys play my game and thus know what to improve and what's popular, as well as keeping track of what you do if there is a bug" AMAGAH PERSSUNAL INFO AMAGAH, I GOTTA UPDATE FLASH NO WAY SUPER SECYRR WITH ALL THESE VULNERABILITIES IN THE OLD VERZZYN BAHT DAT GAIZ WUNT MAH INFURRR WID DA ENKRYPTZIN Seriously, Update flash, make sure it's secure, and then get over the fact this guy is doing NON-INVASIVE data gathering on GAMEPLAY to IMPROVE UPDATES It's fucking normal and expected for ANY product to do that in different ways. Would you rather send him a survey? Granted some products also offer to opt-out of it, so perhaps that could be a feature in a new version
>> Anon 19108 I accept that any data is being collected for overall game improvement. I guess some people just are a little susupicious/feel betrayed, because they didn't expect. Some people don't handle being surprised very well. Many of these people also don't read blogs and that kinda stuff too. But those who will not trust simply won't trust. Que sera sera, I guess.
>> Anon 19157 >choose your gender >choose your gender identity dropped
>> Horsie 19159 >Based on your decision, your avatar has automatically been equipped with a vagina. LOLed.
>> Anon 19171 I think I honestly rather roleplay than watch the game do it for me.
>> Anon 19191 Seriously, where a lot of these text based game fail is A. People who can't write worth a shit. (Yours wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so extraordinarily boring) B. Pour too much of their own feelings into their writing. I rather play CoC and that has some pretty shit writing at times.
>> Anon 19192 >># Welcome to the modern age you backwards fuck
>> Anon 19262 >># Looks like someone didn't check his privilege
