>> [_] Anon 3251050 Haha this is amazing. Kind of leads me to believe that all mainstream music is formulaic in its manufacture.
>> [_] Anon 3251098 Pop chords?
>> [_] Anon 3251102 >># Most popular music is common time (4:4) and roughly 120 bpm (to make mash-ups like this the tracks are typically sped/slowed to match one another) and use similar (or identical) chords (eg, basso classico). Familiarity is genuinely enjoyable and it has its place in music. You do see mainstream music occasionally go for 3:4 (like a waltz) or use unusual keys. Personally, I'm usually much more disappointed in lyrical content than anything else. I wish instrumental music were more popular for that reason.

>> [_] Anon 3088097 A lot of producers follow a very formulaic pattern for the songs they choose to be radio-play singles. A certain length for each part of the song, changing from verse to chorus, etc. A lot of songs like these two will overlap almost perfectly without any editing necessary because of this. Some bands claim that their hit radio single was almost a completely different song before the producer got a hold of it and edited the shit out of it. Not calling it a bad thing, but that's why these songs seem to overlap perfectly. Radio optimization is homogenous.

>> [_] Anon 2925967 oh wow how strange editing something to fit with something else makes it fit. how did that happen
>> [_] Anon 2925970 >Pop song >Pop song It's almost like these bands get their songs created by the labels' engineers to be catchy. Oh wait, that's exactly what happens.
>> [_] Anon 2925991 this is actually not bad
>> [_] Anon 2926011 Here's the real answer why these two songs fit (takes some music theory knowledge to understand why): Linkin Park's "In the End" is in the key E minor Smashmouth's "Allstar" is in the key of F# major Now at first glance you wouldn't think these two keys fit together, but in the key of E minor, F# is the second scale degree. Now if you were to play the mode F# Dorian (basically play an E minor scale starting on the second not of the scale and ending on the second note) it would fit perfectly within the key of E minor. Plus the Dorian mode sounds very much like natural minor, the only difference between the two being the 6th step is raised a half step. Therefore, the reason the song works is because, while "In the End" is playing the key of E minor, Smashmouth's melody is coming of as if it's playing in F# Dorian. Because of this the songs mesh well harmonically. That and both songs are pretty much the same rhythmically and have the same tempo.

>> [_] Anon 2861938 Because all pop music is engineered to be catchy and addicting. No seriously, pop music can be engineered these days, it's no surprise a lot of pop music follows similar formats. Those formats are the ones that have been proven to get stuck in listener's heads. As a result, they can also be laid over eachother well. They're all following very similar formulas. The Hanlon's Razor interpretation of this is that artists occasionally stumble into this formula completely unintentionally, and those are the songs that become really popular.
