how did touhou become popular in the first place? Its only fair to middling as far as indie games

let's see...
- lots and lots of moe girls with 'charming' dresses/accessories/monstrous features
- more games for brand loyalty
- artwork so bad even a caveman could draw the characters better
- tolerable music for groups to spring up with the sole purpose of remixing said touhou music
- setting ripe for loli and yuri fans
- and of course the tendency of fans to hijack every remotely interesting thing on the internet
and add touhou characters, thus spreading awareness further
for cave story to get such a following you'd need some five games at the least and all of the
male humans, mimigas, ball gods, and giant lunchboxes changed to cute humans/monster girls with
tons of cutesy accessories for fans to draw
and it would take work from the fans to convert people and maintain interest with a constant
stream of new content
