To get the codes to work, on the title screen, press tab and it'll briefly reveal the space
you have to click on (just to the left of the "start" graphic). Then enter whatever codes you
want.

The "Infinite" life code means "Infinite" life, not "Invulnerability"
In short, you still lose life, you just never run out...
