Granted Polynesian trade may have indeed made its way to south america, or at least Easter Island, but it tended to be one-way, as island populations were forced to expand outwards. Even if they did manage contact and trade with Meso-Americans and Peruvians, I can't think of any potato cultivars fit for hawaii's climate, even if we include the historically unpopulated mountaintops. I think this quotation, if not an original aphorism, is likely in reference to Okinawan Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas cv. Ayamurasaki) which despite its name is, IN FACT, not a potato. It may also be a mis-identification of taro root, Colocasia esculenta, which is also commonly substituted for potato and other starchy tubers. None-the-less, Mr. Makani is almost certainly not quoting Ancient Hawaiians. How disappointing.
