If you move too fast in the stairs while jumping you can get out of the scene, and the camera will stop moving. Maybe keep the gravity the same, but lower his jumping height? I don't even know how this works, so don't put me on the stake here. Also, maybe everything should be slowed down? Im fixing it and still learning in the process.
