My theory was that it started out with her being dead. But in some twist, it was actually he who
was dead.
So somehow, they both 'live' in a world where their true love is dead, and they're trying
(unsuccessfully) to cope with their grief.

That part near the end where they both stretch back a little and then pull together is awful.
