Is it wrong that I got a feeling of sadistic satisfaction knowing that I was traveling along
destroying all those other dots and their meaningless little formations? chasing every last one

The video was pretty dumb because I didn't get emotional in the game. I thought the point of the
game was to run into each group and push them away but that didn't make me feel lonely and I
wasn't angry at the dots for being propelled away. It was a shitty game and the video tried to
glorify it as having more choice than fallout 3 and other games. There was no choice in this game
other than your own imagination, which all the games the video compared it to would be a better
place to imagine things. The game shows you as a dot traveling along a white screen with other
dots moving away from you. You're meaning to tell me this game has more choice because of its
mechanic than a 3-D world with a shitload of landscapes?

You're trashing the video because the game didn't relate to you? The video even considered people
that didn't receive a reaction. If the game didn't emotionally include you, that's your own
prerogative. Plenty of people obviously suffer from loneliness, and can relate themselves to the
game. Clearly it isn't a problem for you, so why /would/ it spark any emotion?
>> [_] Anonymous 08/08/12(Wed)19:38 No.1739443

I've been lonely before you faggot. You seriously expect me to believe that dots moving away from
other dots is an extremely complex concept and "metaphorical mechanic" that justifies a five
minute video because "theres just so much to talk about"? No, fuck you OP, you're a fag.
>> [_] Double Gold !!AuAuJw9qixy 08/08/12(Wed)19:45 No.1739446
>>1739443
Everyone has, but you obviously don't suffer from it -- or you can't/refuse to relate to games in
this way. Nobody said it was extremely complex.
You're so mad about nothing, and you're missing the point of the video. Even if the game didn't
emotionally involve you, it was an example of having that mechanic in games -- you don't believe
such an example would work for everybody, do you?

I played the game, I understood the concept of loneliness being conveyed because of the title of
the game and because of the way the game progresses. I didn't feel lonely or associate with the
dots like they were people, but I understood.
The video is dumb because it plays it off like the mechanic is the entire reason someone would
feel lonely when playing this game. Even the creator calls it a nongame because its basically an
interactive story demonstrating loneliness, but the video somehow thinks that a dot moving around
in its little linear storyline gives more opportunity for choice than a 3-D sandbox landscape
like Fallout 3.

(cont.):
So no, I didn't get the point of the video because the video is stupid and there is no mechanic
here that can be applied to other video games, unless you consider the mechanic to be loneliness
itself which is already present in video games. There's nothing new or groundbreaking here which
is why OP is a fag for urging people to watch the video. If OP wanted intelligent discussion, he
could have just submitted the flash without the pretentious video.

At first I was like "lulz, daily serving of hipster bs."
And then I was like "HOOOOO! CLEAR A PATH MUTHERFUCKERS!" as I ran into crowd after crowd like
pigeons.
And then as they got fewer and fewer I kind of gulped but I didn't surrender my nervous smile.
And by the time I reached the end, the only thing I could see was my face reflected in my
pitch-black screen, and it wasn't smiling anymore.
It was the face of a person who knew that feel.

>like the mechanic is the entire reason someone would feel lonely when playing this game
...It /is/, but of course the user has to be involved to make the mechanic effective -- if that's
what you're saying. What would this game be without it? You could move a pixel on a gradient.
Where does the emotional involvement stem from, then?
The choices in this game VS. actual games was really dumb, no need to even argue there. Clearly
there's better games available, but he said beforehand that the choices you make can say a lot
about your personality -- that's the point I interpreted.
I don't think it's the best video either, but your main argument was about the video not relating
to you, and trashing the video because of your own experience with the game. Again, the video
clearly pointed out there's some people who don't have a reaction from the game.
For some people it's new or insightful; but of course, it isn't groundbreaking by any means.

After posting this I see some people posting who didn't seem to play it all the way through. It's
probably ruined for you now because now you have expectations of the game and the impact has
faded, but its actually a very poignant little game.
I remember reading the article OP posted and this is a great example of what they were talking
about. There's a sort of "The 6th Sense" moment where everything clicks, and you realize the
author isn't just showing you loneliness, he's showing you the dynamic of loneliness itself.
Where the punch lies is when the pattern of what the other dots do is so deeply ingrained in you
that when the frequency of them fades and you no longer see them as a group, but as an
individual, in the momentary space between when you first see them individually and when you
approach them, you realize what's going to happen and that you're already defeated.
And then everything fades into itself and nothing matters anymore.

otherwise it seems like bullshit.

if the artist's intent can be summarized in a single simple sentence, the piece is objectively
juvenile
this idea of art being a vague series of stimuli (dots on white background moving away from each
other) with a small inkling of coherency (a title, an afterword) is just boring. art should have
multiple layers of concepts and philosophies that can be unified into a worldview because that's
what the human experience is - complexity, contradiction, multifariousness. simplicity is great,
but only if the message isn't trite like this is.
tl;dr: things can make you feel, but not everything that makes you feel is "art"
