Well, I just finished this today.

It's a great game.
Do yourself a favor, and play the first game now. (MOTHER/Earthbound Zero)
I prefer it to Earthbound, and it explains some of the backstory to it too. Also, half of the
music in the series seems to originate from it.

I missed out on this series completely. My only exposure has been Smash Bros. From everything
I've read, though, it seems too... "cute" (if that's the word?) to be worth picking up now.

Mother 3 is definitely worth a play through.
As for the other two, I think the word you're looking for is "archaic". They have very solid
characters and writing, but very much play like a game from 15 years ago.
If that's not the kind of thing that puts you off, they've both got plenty of moments that make
it worth it.

I'd say that Earthbound was ahead of its time. It poked a lot of fun at the fantasy RPG's that
were really common then.

Just emulate them. It's worth it.

Claus fired an intense lightning bolt!
Lucas's Franklin Badge reflected the lighting!
Claus took mortal damage!
