That's because this is Akira Toriyama's design, the creator of the Dragon Ball series. He also

I never really liked these cutscenes. They clash with the gameplay and don't really fit into the
game. That's really the only complaint I have about the PSX/DS versions of this game.

An "actual" Trigger sequel? I thought Cross was a great sequel. Did you play Radical Dreamers? It
was kind of a transitional game, sort of. Anyway, the plot from Trigger does extend into Cross
and develops quite a bit. It just isn't explained very well. It's unfortunately one of those
games where you have to really obsess over it before you can figure out everything the main
narrative seemed to want to gloss over.

I've enjoyed many of the remakes but I've never cared for this animation. They included it on the
first remake for the psx and every other one since. They could drop it from future remakes and I
wouldn't miss it.
