There are thousands of CC/direct debit terminals, medical equipment like health monitors for
peeople who are in danger of heart attacks, SCADA equipment like in remote controlled
transformers or water reservoirs and so on etc. that use dial up to connect in operation
It "just works", and can even be powered remotely.
If you just need to transmit a string of numbers or characters like when verifying a payment
method, 56k is plenty.
