IIRC it actually IS radiation being deflected by the magnetosphere.
When our magnetic poles shift, the earth's magnetic field is weakened and there's a HUGE uptick
in solar radiation. It usually results in mass extinctions.
Mars' magnetic field is dead, which is why it has no atmosphere - it was literally obliterated by
radiation.
thankfully it's a process that takes millenia to occur, so we'd be able to prepare.
