In my opinion this is the moment that led to Gary losing future tournaments and eventually
retiring to become a pokemon researcher. Before this he'd gone through other trainers and wild
pokemon like they were nothing... and now to lose, and not just lose but get DEMOLISHED by a
pokemon damaged his belief in himself.
It's very telling that he can't even bring himself to taunt Ash at the end.

the problem with the anime was that it peaked too early. Gary Oak was and still is the best rival.

the Gary from the anime doesn't count. Ash is Red's little brother, and Gary pretends to be his
rival. The real Gary had all his hopes and dreams crushed, and his Raticate killed, by Red and
that's what broke him.
