Yeah, no. If you're leaving our borders, you will usually pass multiple (at least one) customs
checkpoints before this happens.
He would have been turned around, more than likely. His story doesn't add up.
I think its just. If he wanted to work here, he should have considered the implications.

He admitted to be working in the U.S. on a visa-waiver. It sounds like he may have even admitted
the duration. That's a valid reason for deportation.
He could have come up with another excuse for being in the U.S. Sight-seeing, touring, etc.
It would have gone smoother if there were no further implications.
