He's actually not that great at normal painting, but he created some of the best wet-on-wet/dry
oil techniques there are.
He developed them in Vietnam. He sold his paintings to earn a little extra cash, because American
GIs were paid diddly shit. Because he would have drop everything at a moment's notice to go fight
if there was a raid or something, he lost a lot of paintings when he used traditional techniques.
So he invented a bunch of techniques that allowed him to complete paintings very quickly, with
the ability to leave them and come back at any time without ruining them. This also let him paint
something in the limited timeslot of a TV show, which is where he gained fame.

Bob Ross did not become famous because he created remarkable masterworks. He became so well known
because he learned how to start making a happy little tree, suddenly be pulled into a nightmarish
world with blood and bodies everywhere, come back and finish his happy little tree. The guy was
every bit as deep as he came off.

He was drafted into the Vietnamese war, one of the worst wars to be a footsoldier in that America
has participated in.

Umm...
>Ross enlisted in the United States Air Force at age 17 . The Air Force transferred him to
Eielson Air Force Base (in Alaska), where he first saw the snow and mountains that later became
recurring themes in his artwork. He developed his quick-painting technique in order to be able to
create art for sale in brief daily work breaks.[4] Having held military positions that required
him to be, in his own words, "mean" and "tough," "the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the
guy who makes you make your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work," Ross decided
that if he ever moved on from the military, "it wasn't going to be that way any more," vowing
"never to scream again."

Also, Mr. Rogers neither served in the military (especially not as a sniper or Navy SEAL) nor had
a criminal past.

I had an art teacher who said that artists hated bob ross for not using the principles of color,
form, perspective and whatnot...then I saw my teacher's shitty painting and I realized he was a
jealous, pretentious man-twat.

People love stories about redemption, and the internet is killing the illusion that such
redemption exists.
I fucking love it.
