It's funny. Characters in animes have light skin, widely varied hair and eye color, well-defined
features, wide, bright eyes. Their faces are very expressive; it's always very obvious when
they're happy, sad, frowning, blushing...and all very individualistic.
In short, they exemplify everything that the Japanese aren't, and much more closely resemble
westerners. At no time is the dissonance more apparent than when we see actual Japanese people
side by side with anime characters they're supposed to represent, as here.
Still convinced all anime characters are supposed to be Japanese? "Shhh, just because they don't
look Japanese doesn't mean they aren't Japanese." Nevermind that appearance is the only trait
that universally differentiates members of different races.
Anime characters don't actually exist, but if they did, Europeans would be the closest match. So
fuck you weeaboos.

They display neoteny only because Japan is obsessed with cuteness. "Kawaii" in Japan is as
desired a trait as "Sexy" in the US. Cuteness is a result of our biological response to protect
children, so of course they would make fictional characters look young. They would also make
fictional characters fair skinned and colorful because they wish they were.
