Both my cats are 18 years old. One has become deaf, the other emaciated no matter how much it's
fed. They are both very weak now. They've been alive and well for so long, that I'd started to
feel like they'd live forever. When you've known someone as long as this, you know all their
habits and quirks, what food they like, how they play, where they hide and sleep, what their
footsteps sound like, all the sounds they make...and know that you can't imagine the silence they
will leave behind. Even now, with their energy gone, no longer able to jump or play, devoid of
many of the traits that used to bring amusement, I can see the love and contentedness in their
eyes. Eyes that say "There's nothing I regret." And it's then that I realize that they have been
a better friend than anyone I've known.
