The original concept was that pokemon trainers were in a post-post apocalyptic setting, gym
leaders were gang members, and battles were to the death, monsters and trainers included among
the death count. Remnants can still be found in the lore of the original games

I enjoy how fucking edgy everybody in this thread thinks they are.
Yeah, our kids shows were about as violent as this is. Whoop-de-fuckin-doo. But now that most of
us have grown up a little we can understand that pinning an animal to the ground and crushing the
life out of it with your jaw is twisted. As a kid, you'd just gloss over this and say "the lizard
got bit in the fight and it was really cool" and that's it. As an adult you can see other layers
of fucked up shit going on, like how the trainer chokes and doesn't do anything for a few
seconds, charmander is screaming the whole time, and squirtle seems rather indifferent to the
suffering it is causing. That's all. You just grew up and can recognize violence. Congrats.
