You're close to the main idea.
You just need to watch it in the point of view of the main character. She's afraid by sex and
consequently to grow up. She runs away from his friends who are sexually active but you can't run
from that and she dies from it.
the pool is like a mirror and she passes through it.
the giant monster represents the truth she can't accept. and like human died from watching gods
in mythologies... she dies.
BUT, you can also watch it as a classic horror story with a portal (the pool) used by horrible
creatures from another dimensions to invade our world.
I'm not a big fan of explaining what I wanted to say but... hu... I don't know... i'm tired this
morning and I did it anyway.

elder gods of the lovecraft mythos do cause people to go insane and alot of the times, but if the
eldrich abominations chasing her didn't do anything other than make her crotch tingle chances are
she was strong enough of will, nevermind. point is unless that was Azathoth or one of the other
outer gods her brain wouldnt have sploded. also Cthulu isnt an Elder God he's an old one, hes
like the pope or high preist to the outer gods.
