Why was there even a contrast dial on those in the first place?

Hoe could you possibly benefit from less contrast?

So when the batteries got really low, you could turn the contrast up and keep playing for another
  20 min.

Why can't we have more commercials like this.

Contrast was not so much needed for battery levels, but temperatures. The display would change
greatly between a warm day to a cold morning. Laptop screens had them too, usually digital
(function keys on the keyboard) and I think it was removed with the TFT panels.

My question is where the hell did this come from? Was it a skit? Was it supposed to be funny? To
whom was it supposed to be funny too?

This was from a training video for salesman at retail stores from Nintendo. It included details
on how to set up display demos, common issues and questions the might receive and how to address
  them.

That's all fine and dandy but it doesn't answer the question as to why some Nintendo DS games
give you the option to turn off the blacklight, when clearly the backlight it the only source of
light and once turned off, causes the screen to go entirely black. What purpose does this
  actually serve?

The original Nintendo DS had a transflective screen. It was pretty poor but the image was visible
  with it off.
