Much of the point of Evangelion is that the director got sick of unrealistic characters - the
idea of kids being thrown into giant robots and rolling with it is silly, when you think about
it. Shinji acts somewhat realistically in the unrealistic scenario he inhabits.
"Hey kid, go fight the giant monster to the death in this robot that you don't know how to use.
Oh, and future of humanity's on you. No pressure."
