  A vocorder takes a sound and separates the carrier (pitch and its harmonics) from the signal (how
  the pitch etc changes). You can then mix the carriers and signals from different sources to
  produce different effects.

  Mixing a computer generates square wave carrier with a human voice signal give a robotic sound.
  Some effects pedals will mix a human voice with and instrument creating the commonly known
  'singing guitar'.

  Another use is to help keep singers from going off key.
