I started out my life with games on a ZX Spectrum, so I'd allready been inundated with these
noises LONG before the internet was an established thing (back when dialing into other computers
was the gig)

Seriously, I had a Specturm 128K+2A but my first experience with noises like that was my father's
ZX81. Man that was awesome.
So when I first got my 56K V.90 external dialup modem, and first logged onto NTL dialup
internet...
oh man... Hearing those noises it was <3 at first byte (OHOHOHOHO goddammit kill me.)
I did always miss the awesome rhythm that spectrum games had when they brought up the loading
graphic screen in three pieces. It usually had a really neat beat to it.
