Ross enlisted in the United States Air Force at age 17. The Air Force transferred him to
Elmendorf Air Force Base (in Alaska), where he first saw the snow and mountains that later became
recurring themes in his artwork. He developed his quick-painting technique to create art for sale
in brief daily work breaks. Having held military positions that required him to be, in his own
words, "mean" and "tough," "the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who makes you make
your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work," Ross decided that if he ever moved
on from the military, "it wasn't going to be that way any more," vowing "never to scream again."

No matter how hard I try I cannot picture Bob Ross as a military hard-ass.

I did a lot of shit back when I was 17. But then I came upon a realization and changed my way of
thinking.
The same happened to him I guess

Bob Ross could paint like a boss.
What always fucked with my head was when he would occassionally not even be looking at the canvas
while painting and just staring at the camera talking to you while his hand was just smashing out
mountains and rivers and shit.
When you try to do the same thing and look away for a moment while painting and then look back,
god help you.

That's the sign of a professional. He wanted to paint mountains and snow so he made his own
technique for it. It became a routine and everything he did came from muscle memory. It was
routine to him as every time he painted the same things in slightly different ways.
