A major plot point in Half Life 2 Episodes 1 and 2 is Dr Mossman's discovery in the Arctic of the
wreck of the Borealis - a cargo ship Aperture was using to do large-scale experiments of portal
technology on which suddenly and mysteriously vanished.
In Ep1 and Ep2 you and Alyx discover Mossman's transmission and desperately try to get the
information out of City 17 and through the wilderness to the Resistance leaders. Presumably
because the Combine (now cut off from reinforcements in their home dimension/universe/whatever)
are desperate to find technology that can help them reconnect to their forces.
A teaser from Valve showing a mysterious cargo ship in the middle of a frozen wasteland could
hardly be connected to anything other than HL3
