The modern world is so nerfed and regulated that there are pretty much no natural dangers
anymore. I might get attacked up by some punk kid or get charged by a deer. My ancestors had
bears and Indians, farm accidents (my great aunt lost a hand in a corn shucker), diseases like
smallpox and typhoid, and wars.
Not saying it's not progress. Just that there are far fewer life-or-death situations. Kids want
to prove themselves, and they have to invent opportunities. These guys won't contribute a lot of
brains to the gene pool, but their kids will be tough.
