This works because it's a chain reaction of molecules pushing on other molecules. It happens nearly instantaneously as there are relatively few molecules involved. If you had a 5LY steel rod on the other hand, it would take longer for the energy from the near end to travel to the far end -- the kinetic energy would travel as a pressure wave much slower than the speed of light. It's unlikely the signal would arrive at all since the energy would quickly be lost to friction.
