Have you tried Wakfu? It's a good show once you get past the first ten episodes (the ten which
happen to be very reminiscent of typical kid's shows). After those episodes, the plot curve
actually develops and it's like watching DBZ with portals. Also, the fight scenes are very well
animated and dynamic.
If not Wakfu, then I suggest Kids on the Slope. A nice little one-shot anime about jazz.
Basically the best anime I've seen to date. The character development is solid and the show is
great at avoiding anime tropes while maintaining a rather compelling story.
