I can't stand the trope other animes follow in this style. Where the "protagonist" is a whiny
loser who complains the entire series and never amounts to anything, leeching off the support of
others, bitching out when they're needed most.
Example:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Alien 9
Hellsing
etc etc etc.
It ruins the series for me. If the main char is like shinji, I'll skip ahead to the last EP for
confirmation before deleting.

Evangelion is terrible. There are far better shows that carry the same or similar message to
evangelion without being nearly as shitty. I will forever maintain that if you have to have giant
robots to tell your story, you are telling your story wrong.
Oh, and claiming a show is too deep for someone is just a shitty way for you to feel like your
opinion is more valid than theirs is without actually doing anything to support that claim.

It was going to be a light-hearted action series about robots until Anno started injecting his
depression into everything. This afterthought ended up being a lot more compelling. The nuances
in how the characters act in regards to their rather complex complexes are what make it great.
It's a showcase of broken people and how being broken compels them to make the decisions they do.
Giant robbits stopped being the focus during production and seem to have just ended up as a
pretext to throw the characters into stressful and outlandish situations and explain how they act.

I get that, but the problem is that the characters are too broken to actually be capable of
telling the story they are in. Instead of being about how the characters rise, fall, or adapt to
deal with the situation; the just cry bitch and fuck until they fall ass backwards into a finale
that doesn't connect with the rest of the story.

The interaction between Gendo and whoever the science lady was with whom he was in a relationship.
Everyone in this damned show is inadequate and a failure in some regard, and they're forced to
make sacrifices they don't want to make. She choked li'l Rei and committed suicide, others curl
up and cry like bitches and have internal dialog.
...And then the budget ran out and you had a minute and a half of a still frame before Shinji got
his act together and unleashed the ending.

And there are shows that do that exact thing without needing giant robots or an apocalypse. No
shit people are having a hard time and are failing when the entire fucking planet has been blown
to hell and everyone has to live in an underground complex. There are shows that deal with
depression, failure, and personal sacrifice that are much much better than evangelion and don't
rely on stupid shit like that to get the point across.
