They play very generic, inoffensive music that isn't actually that bad, which means it was on the
radio all the time on multiple stations, and was chosen as background music at all kinds of
dances and functions. It didn't help that their songs and albums are fairly close to
indifferentiable.
This meant that pretty much everyone had heard or heard of them, even the people who stay away
from just pop music, but they hadn't attained the kind of real popularity that means you're an
edgy faggot to attack them. So by default they became that band you made fun of to show "hey I
know enough about music to make fun of this band, hugbox me Interent!"
