  the volksturm was a near death sentence if you actually mobilized with your unit and were sent to
  the front. Many units were not issued uniforms, weapons, or basic food and equipment. They were
  pitted up against battle hardened Red Army units with massive artillery and air support. All it
  was - was a vain attempt at building morale or to force the remainder of the German men and boys
  who had not already been called up into a miserable death. Emulating their own leaders downfall
  and humiliation. Most Volksturm members ignored their calls to service and attempted to hide or
  avoid capture either by Feldgendamerie or Red Army units (who assumed all German men they found
  were either in the wehrmacht or SS)
