  I imagine if parents, before the whole post-modernist thing, saw their kid paint a jackson
  pollock painting they would have kept it around until the kid forgot about it then thrown it in
  the trash. Either that or, if the kids old enough, be punished for wasting paint by just throwing

  I agree that modern art has lost standards of objective standards and quality, but i still think
  art fundamentally comes down to the artists own expression of their emotions and intents. I saw
  the Death of Socrates in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art by Jacques-Louis David and it
  evoked some of the strongest emotions i've felt towards a piece of artwork, even after visiting
  the Louvre in Paris. Modern Art in my opinion is objectively worse than classical art, but i
  don't think we can completely discount modern artists as a whole. I don't think that modern
  artists emotions and expression are any less valuable than classicists since it reflects on the
  turbulence and nature of the society the artist resides in partly. The execution, though is
  flawed, or at least in an objective sense inferior to the masters of the classics

  There can be objective criteria for art, but consumers (viewers, patrons, whatever you want to
  call them) of art can easily disregard them, so it's also true that beauty is in the eye of the
  beholder, for better or for worse.

  There are two differences between classic art and modern art.

  In classic art, you were given a huge pile of money to make a piece of art.

  In modern art, literally anyone can publish art, they get the money after it is done.

  Second, the invention of the photograph has made it pointless to make art that is just a copy of
  real life.
