It's the lore that kept me playing, personally. Kept. Because the game became broken and
unplayable with Cataclysm's release. After that I just sticked to the cinematics and eventually
some wiki-articles. Also, the pandas aren't that bad considering the story, too, but making them
a playable race, being able to join both the factions, was a huge mistake indeed.
As for the age, I started playing it when I was 10, or 11, continued through all the expansions
on private servers until mid-2010, then went for global and played up to the Cataclysm. I endured
with this abomination of an expansion for a month and then turned my back on Blizzard when I was
16 and the year was 2011.
So, you might be right with the age thing. The game most certainly attracted young teens with
fuckloads of time and cash.
PvP was nice in BC and WotLK, I remember that I really enjoyed it, don't know about the new
expansions, though.
