From what I understand, the creators of the show felt it was their job to teach kids about the
world - including stuff that isn't sunshine and roses.

>During the 1980s, the show incorporated the real-life experiences of the show's cast and crew,
including the death of Will Lee (Mr. Hooper) and the pregnancy of Sonia Manzano (Maria) to
address affective concerns.[10] In later seasons, Sesame Street addressed real-life disasters
such as the September 11 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina.[37]

We all have to learn about it sometime. Big bird is a big kid; learning the same way we all do.
This is sad, but at least it's a good lesson for kids without being traumatic or anything. Sesame
street is the only show i've ever wanted to actually work on in NYC. I used to always sneak in
when we were working at Kaufman Studios all the time. It was amazing.

Mr. Rogers did shit like this all the time, he taught kids about divorce, death, and all sorts of
things that most parents had a hard time bringing up.

Just watched the September 11 one. Elmo's at a restaurant and there's a grease fire in the
kitchen. The fire is put out without any damage, but Elmo gets PTSD from the experience. A trip
to the fire station makes everything better.
Bit of a stretch comparing it to 9/11.

I don't hear it.
I always used to compare Big Bird's voice to a female Michael Jackson as a child.
But as you said, you never grew up with Sesame Street so you kind of lucked out.

it's sad but it's actually an initiative more children cartoons and such should take up,
especially ones with educative purpose. life isn't sunshine and roses all the time, it can get
pretty tough even when you're a kid so teaching the young about things such as death, divorce and
the like early is good.
you just don't show them the gore and graphic violence and shit, just make them understand that
life isn't just happiness for ever. better that than having them learn the hard way when someone
close to them actually dies.
