I did it once I got to level 140 or so with 13 hero souls to transcend for. At that point the gap
to pay for even level 1 of the next hero was fucking huge.

It doesn't really matter, but for your first time aim for like at least 8-10 hero souls. Meet
that and then keep going until it's too hard to get levels, preferably doing it after a threshold
so that you don't waste time.
I would recommend holding onto your souls until a second or third ascension.
