Anything with Hideaki Anno's name stuck to it pretty much is. Him working with Miyazaki on this
basically cements any suspicion you might have about it being a poke at the otaku lifestyle but
what it is supposed to mean is entirely on the part of the viewer.
Its not trying to be pretentious. Its actually fairly simplistic in its message- popular culture,
particularly the pass times of the otaku, becomes a psychological trap to insulate one's self
from bad decision making. What makes it truly sinister though isn't so much the fact it floods
you with visual and audio pornography (the classical definition, not just floppy naked tits and
booty shaking) but rather that as you get more familiar and complacent with it the more you want
to shake yourself OUT of it, and similarly the harder it becomes.
But it can also not mean that. Everyone's free to have bad tastes.
