Yes, it's at least as good as the original. It has only 80 levels though not 100 like the
original. And the final boss is markedly more difficult.

The hell, I used the escape wings and it ended the game. I assumed it'd take me back to the shop.

there's stat shards you collect that permanently increase your strength/life/defense each time
you use the escape wings

escape wings only save your items with the yellow background.
so if you are low health you should sell all non yellows and use wings if you can

after you use the wings, you need to start a new quest... you lose all your stuff except
artifacts and increased statistics
you resume the game at the last shop you made it to, there's one every 9 levels or so
