Time to kill enemies and cost for things that kill enemies faster go up exponentially. Gold from
killed enemies and damage from the things that kill enemies also go up exponentially, but at a
lower rate. Eventually you hit a wall where the amount of time that it would take to progress
becomes prohibitive.
Then you "ascend" to get hero souls. Whether you spend them on ancients or hold on to them for
their damage boosts, they act like a multiplier and eventually become obsolete, forcing you to
ascend again to get more. The amount of hero souls you get per ascension goes up the farther you
get, but so does the number of them required to make a non-negligible difference, as well as the
number of levels you have to get through to start getting an amount of them that matters.
Basically, it's a game about spending time so you get to spend less time wasting time the next
time you spend time.
