I sued to think the same thing. If you are okay with mediocre seeking, audio buffering, aliased
subtitles, and color fading - then by all means, continue using VLC.
If you want to try something better, download mpc-hc from cccp. Open one file with vlc on one
side of your screen, and mpc-hc on the other. VLC cannot optimize codecs for h.264 and mkv. This
leads to a low contrast between colors (especially blacks looking dark grey). This is not mpc-hc
adding filters or changing the original file. VLC literally fucks up file quality in exchange for
speed.
