I don't get the confederacy, because it's about a group of states that were antithetical to the
values of America, and were directly opposed of America.

Basically one group of people fought another to change the way things are done. When a government
never changes throughout time you can get back to us on your complaint. Many people would rather
live in the CSA today. State right should supersede federal rights.

I read a really great academic paper on the constitutional law of the US confederacy. It was
really interesting, I dont doubt they held american values.
Like for example, the confederate constitution was basically a clone of the US constitution with
a few changes. One change, for example, was that the confederate government could not spend money
on projects that benefitted individual states. Leading up to the civil war, the southern
governments had some legitimate gripes with how the constitution was being interpreted in the US,
and built their interpretations into their new constitution.
The confederate government was really good about protecting the freedom of speech. Journalists I
believe were exempt from the draft, and allowed to publish some really radical things. President
Davis in particular was very dedicated the constitution, and never suspended habeas corpus like
Lincoln did.
On the other hand, there seemed to be no barrier between church and state in the confederate
government. The confederate military straight up employed pastors, and one of the few additions
to the confederate constitution was a comment about God. The weirdest thing about this, is that
they didnt seem to see any conflict about this.
