It's a mandola. Belongs to the mandolin instrument family, and tuned like a viola.
The bigger one is an irish buzuki or a long-scale octave mandolin.

It's octave doubling. Just because your ear can't "hear it" doesn't mean it'll sound the same
without it.
This was recorded and mixed very professionally, for a home setup.

Does it bother anyone else that there are (obvious) missing instruments in the sound track that
are not present in the video. Also, the flutes are often seen playing rhythms on the flutes that
are not part of the audio track.
