He only has one small jump that couldn't get me through special world 1-2. Not every character is equal. The mario characters can jump on heads, which in itself is a huge advantage. They seem to be most capable for speed runs and for overall performance, as many enemies require either being shot a few times or being stomped on once. Putting in the danger of stomping on an enemy versus shooting them, one could deduce shooting would be more safe, but a lot of characters stop to shoot or have low shooting range (samus without mushroom). It's a lot more reliable to kill the enemy once than to depend on having a mushroom that may or may not stay for the entire level. You do get damaged. The Ninja Gaiden series characters also have a lot better attack damage (one hit to make a turtle hide in its shell and one hit kill for a goomba). There are also characters like the fire man who have better attack damage, but limited abilities. There is one ninja gaiden character who has faster attack speed, but no weakness. IIRC, it was the hustler 3. Luigi should totally be avoided because his jump and running will easily put any of us off while mario seems like a good candidate overall. He has the traditional side of the game on his side. You can see his power ups for one, and he can jump on any heads of enemies. However, there are some good characters like Bass, who has a double jump, quick attack speed, and nice damage.
