An obedient dog will see you as the master and alpha over it and know it's not good to fight back. An aggressive dog views you as something that can be intimidated and dominated. If you let it act that way then it will think it's the alpha over you and will behave as such. A beating is not the solution but you definitely need to show the dog who's boss. The best way in relation to food is to not allow the dog to eat until it's calm and acting the way you want it to and then immediately take away it's food if it growls or acts defensively. It'll learn pretty quickly that it has to be good if it wants to eat.
