I was about to point something out, but then I realized this shit is over half a decade old.
Jesus christ, time moves fast.

I've never played Left 4 Dead, should I get that or play through Resident Evil (which I never
finished as a kid)?

Left 4 Dead is an objective based game with a heavy multiplayer aspect. It's exclusively an FPS,
and the bundled main story of the game is divided into several missions which you can complete on
your own or with other people. However, be absolutely sure to get L4D2. Not the first one, but
the second one. The former is riddled with bugs that Valve promised yet never got around to
fixing, while the latter is essentially what the first one should have been in the first place.
Resident Evil games are much more different to the L4D franchise, in that they're extremely
focused on survival and frugality, and (at least the older games) were focused on a single player
experience.
I honestly can't compare either series to each other based on what they are, as the only thing I
can find they have related are zombies.
Try out either, they're both great series to get into for their own merits.

Haven't play RE in a while, but can weigh in on L4D.
Co op takes a decent amount of communication and aim at the highest difficulties, mainly from
designating targets, cover, and responsibility for hitting objectives. Also, never wander off.
Versus mode will almost always turn into a speedrun on the human team because the zombie team has
ability cooldowns and respawn timers. Communication is essential on the zombie team if you want
to do any damage at all. If you don't have some familiarity with the maps, you'll get your shit
kicked in regularly.
The other modes are too dead to comment on.
