It always amuses me that people who frequent the meme filled cesspit that is 4chan take exception
to memes being used in constructive ways.
Call them in jokes, culture, society or whatever, they've been around for as long as we have.
Using people's sense of wonder to create a public interest in STEM fields is a pretty decent
