They come to /f/ with no knowledge whatsoever of flash and think using some online mp4 to swf

To be honest, they could easily use ffmpeg to convert to flv and then convert that to swf.
It's been posted heaps of times:

Question.
Is converting from FLV to SWF better then converting from MP4 to SWF?
Like youtube videos offer both but the FLV files are apparently of a smaller size/quality so... I
wouldn't think it would be a better base file to convert from if I wanted the best quality.

Or, alternatively, they could just stop being dumb cunts and lrn2flash.
Seriously newfags, it's not hard. Just pirate the software and play around with all the buttons
for 30 minutes, you'll figure shit out.
>>3009027
Flash isn't really good for video embedding anyway. You really shouldn't be encouraging them to
make even more shitty youtube converts.

>>3009025
Why that first conversion? Why not directly convert into flash? I don't see why you would need to
convert file containers more than once. I mean, I've used FFmpeg and just fiddled with all the
quality options and frame by frame changes to get something that looked decent enough.

You don't "convert" flv to swf. You embed the flv INSIDE the swf. The swf file acts like a box
where you can put a bunch of stuff, e.g. images, music and flv video.
Again, please refrain from actually converting shitty youtube vids and posting them here.

>> [_] Anonymous 01/27/16(Wed)18:11:15 No.3009046
Another question.
When converting MP4 to SWF (yeah yeah don't do it) is there a natural quality loss (because SWF
is an inferior codec for video/overall?) or do you just (ideally) use the same bitrate/framerate
and other specifications?
>> [_] Anonymous 01/27/16(Wed)18:13:56 No.3009047
>>3009046
Well I noticed a significant quality loss when converting/encoding to swf vs other filecontainers
with the same filesize, but I'm shit with computers, so I might have just been doing something
retarded.

Flash is proprietary software, so generally no. I've heard about shitty bootleg stuff that CAN do
compile swf files (or some shitty opensource swf ripoff), but it must be incredibly awful, even
when compared to Adobe's heaps of crap.
Just pirate flash. It's not heavy, it's not hard. I'm pretty sure Adobe released some old version
of it for free on their website, go google that.
>>3009040
In short: if you're inexperienced enough to be asking that kind of question, it doesn't matter
for you, and you're probably doing things wrong anyway.
If you're using SWFh264 (which I personally don't recommend, it's a shitty format and the
produced swfs scream out laziness and poor quality, if you MUST convert a video and dump it on
/f/ do it via http://eye.swfchan.com/services/flvmaker/), just feed it whatever file is the
highest quality you can get your hand on.
>>3009046
Please learn the difference between codec, filetype and swf.
Codec: the actual arrangement of 1's and 0's that produces a moving picture (e.g. h264)
Filetype: a box containing said 1's and 0's, according to specific rules and limitations (mkv
files, for example, allow a lot of video, audio and subtitle tracks of almost all imaginable
codecs be all contained within one file. flv, not so much)
swf: An swf is a special "container file" that can contain a lot of stuff and do a lot of magic
on its own. It can contain video files, audio, images, vector animation, actionscript code and
much, much more. It's not a codec and not a real video filetype (since flv files are stored
within it almost as-is).

That's the point, "converting" or embedding, or encoding or whatever the fuck exact word you want
me to say, a video into a SWF will "convert" or embed, or encode, or entrap, or insert, or
whatever, the video into a format comparable with SWF. So what's the point of "converting" or
ensnaring, or combining, or entombing the video in another SWF comparable container, before
inserting it into the SWF container if the same steps are involved either way?

SwfH264 is only useful if you actually know how to properly encode the video to get the most out
of it. Otherwise it looks just as awful.
Lots of people who upload stuff straight off of youtube just pick the defaults and the end result
is shit.
Sometimes its even as easy as simply copying the streams into an flv container, then embedding
that. But, people still upload crap (topically, and often by technicality).
I can't really blame some of them for not wanting to learn soon to be deprecated actionscript and
its toolset but if you can't even be bothered to read the 5 minute guide on encoding with ffmpeg
you may as well just not bother.

https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Encode/H.264
I call it 5 minutes because you could glance through this, piece together commands and you could
have good quality video.
But to get basic level of gud, you need to understand:
>When to use encoding presets
>Enable high profile
>Use two pass encoding
That will take more than 5 minutes. But the docs there do a pretty decent job of explaining that.
Relevant for here is to use AAC-HE for audio because then you can really bring the bitrate down
(to like 32kbps) without losing much quality (-profile:a aac_he -cutoff 18000 and use libfdk_aac).
