is this any better than what we have today? what's the difference between these memes of
yesterday and the memes of today? exposure?

These are rare memes by our standards but in their time quite well known, however the condition
that is "well known" is a very small envelope compared to "well known" of today which is a huge
  envelope.

was this site truly a better place when far less people used it? I do not know.
Was it more pure? more innocent? No, not at all. At times it was far less pure than it is today.

I ponder now, were we really a better place when this flash was relevant? I want to say no.

Wew lad--ok. Lemme pick this apart for you.

Memes are only as cool as the faggiest person who uses them. With more exposure, it becomes
statistically inevitable that you're going to see more cringe-inducing people using memes.

The reason why this is so is probably that you've never seen a person you don't want to be
associated with using them. You know the type-- your stomach just sinks into your shoes the
instant they notices you in public. He's the lonely bastard who is way too old to be working the
job he has (think a 20-something at McDonald's), he's obviously socially retarded, and probably
had an abused childhood. You often see him come into years-old Skype chats and ask "Is anybody
around?" He prides himself on being a "geek," thinks it makes him smart, despite the fact he
failed out of community college pursuing an english degree. He always wants to hang out, talks
about how you can play boring video games he blew all his money on, and look at his manchild
  collection.

And guess what--he's just discovered this place on the internet -- Reddit. He's too far out of
the know to be tired of this shit, and he thinks he's struck gold. Everything people say here is
so incredibly funny! These people are so witty and clever and edgy and cool! He doesn't know it,
but his limbic system is telling him he's finally found where all the friends who abandoned him
  went.

So he appropriates it entirely. He thinks he now knows the magic words he can use to get people
to like him. He flails around, dropping every meme he's picked up, using some of them
incorrectly. When at first people ignore him, he gets more incessant. It takes him that much
longer to realize that this shit isn't hitting the target with anyone else. And eventually, he
drops it, and returns to his base, desperate state.

The only thing that has permanently changed is that you've gone from thinking the "feels good
man" frog was mildly amusing to feeling physically ill whenever you see it.

Memes, besides being amusing, over time turn into a social group shibboleth. Lonely dysfunctional
people can feel like they belong to a club by appropriating them. The problem with that is that
all social groups that are worth belonging to are necessarily exclusionary.

Humans only like others who can give something in return in mutualistic relationships. When weak
people who have nothing to offer others worm their way into social groups, cooler people ditch.

The memes haven't changed. Humanity has.

What if Moot's been trolling us this whole time?
What if Poole actually was a stand-in for the real Moot, and for years has had us convinced that
  some skinny normalfag was Moot?

Meanwhile the actual Moot is long gone, off to Mexico with 10-year old 4Chan donations, now a
professor in Professional Trolling - and we were his final Thesis

Even those individuals still have something to offer.
Writing them off as useless garbage is pretty harsh man.
They can still offer love/companionship to people and can have their own unique talents and
  pleasant personality traits.
Not everything is about money money money... though this world trys to make it thaty way.

This has nothing to do with money, and I described someone who has pretty much nothing to offer
  anyone.

I know I'll get called edgy but there really are some people who would be better off dead. Most
people have saving graces. Ugly people can be smart. Down syndrome kids can have a good
personality. Psychopaths can be hard workers. The corollary is that most "great" people have
  flaws.

But there's a point you can get to where nobody wants to touch that shit. They aren't kind, they
aren't smart or witty, and they aren't pretty. They can't maintain social relationships since
they have no sense of what they have to offer, nor the value of what they're demanding of others.
It's probably crueler to tell these people they're special despite their lived experiences than
to just lay it on the line.

I'm not saying they should kill themselves, I mean, these people could have an OK life just
pursuing simple, non-excessive pleasures. But even the ability to recognize and live within one's
own limitations is a saving grace that can be lacked-- these people drive away even their
  pity-friends.

  I know, right?

I think it's youtube and the rise of behavioral metrics that's ruined everything. They always
promote only the "most popular" of anything, so there's only going to be less than 1% of anything
that gets produced that anyone sees. If 90% of everything is shit, it means there's more than 9%
  we're missing out on.

When Newgrounds was the premo place to find flash content, they had a bunch of algorithms
actually created to get underrated stuff noticed. There was an "Underdogs" category, for flashes
that got blammed (rated 0) a lot by people who didn't even sit through them all the way, but were
rated highly by people who took the time to write an actual review.

Nobody does anything like that anymore. Everyone's expected to just like the same thing. I hate
  it.
