It's like people are dancing around something of great value like savages, yelling "burn it", without knowing what they are losing. 500 MiB non-interactive videos replacing 500 KiB interactive flash animations, image-based multi-filed HTML5 replacing vector-based self-contained flash files... We are going backwards. It's happening on many fronts, we see dumbed-down "easy-to-use" things that removes excellent features in later versions just to simplify. Take Skype for example. It had encryption. MS bought it, removed encryption. It had direct file transfers, now you can't send more than 300 MiB because MS has to store the files on their servers (to profile people no doubt). It limits the file size and makes the transfer take twice as long, sometimes even failing. Even the self-proclaimed "Skype killer" Discord has a file transfer limit of something like below 10 MiB. Utterly disgraceful, and you can't not use their man-in-the-middle service. Meanwhile 15 years ago we could send huge files with ICQ, no problem. Programs, or "apps" as they call them now, are getting more locked too and less free than ever before in the past. Manuals in the old days had code for example programs and even detailed schematics for all their hardware circuits. Today you are lucky to get anything except a legal agreement paper and Apple tries to prevent people from repairing their own god damned property. Such progress. Most kids today don't even know how to press PrintScreen, I've asked them!
