It's really fuckin' stupid. The reasonable thing to do is just grab the little fucker by the ear and toss him out. But some places will actually fire you for going against the training because they're so afraid of being "The place some guy got shanked by a shoplifter". If I had a shitty retail job and had to choose between protecting anything in the store and my paycheck, I'd probably go for the paycheck, It's not like tubby was actually capable of hurting anyone. May even get some kind of hazard bonus or some shit.
